#DEBlackHistory – Black Money

Photography provided by Giphy

Today’s topic for #DEBlackHistory is money. Our historical African American figure of choice for today’s topic is Oprah Winfrey. She is one of the richest and most wealthiest black women of our time right now. Most may remember her from the movie The Color Purple, and some may remember her when she had her very own talk show on national television. Oprah Winfrey is one name I will never forget and I’ll always remember sitting on the couch with my grandmother, watching re-runs of her show daily as a child. She has paved the way for many African American women right now.

Born in January of 1952, Winfrey is originally from Mississippi where she endured a number of different sexual assaults and sexual abuse at the hands of multiple family members. She got through everything she had went through from her childhood and graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1971 where she embarked on her television and radio journey. Soon after graduating she began her very own talk show in Chicago after moving to the big city in 1976. Her talk show The Oprah Winfrey Show became a big hit worldwide between the years of 1986 to 2011 and grossed $125 million by the end of the first year of airing. Soon after the end of her talk after 25 season, Winfrey began her very own television network Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). Currently Oprah Winfrey’s net worth is sitting at $2.7 billion!
