Well it has been a minute I must say. Who knew I would’ve lasted a whole 7 years on this natural hair journey? Of course, so far I love everything about my growth and the progress that has been made, but there are some improvements needed.

I completed my first Big Chop during the year of 2012, while also doing a full hot comb press to get me started which was a big mistake that I learned the hard way to start my journey.

During the year of 2016, I began my #NoHeatChallenge in which I completely done away with any heat based appliances or applications to my hair. That meant no hair straighteners, no hair curlers, no blow dryers, not even hooded dryers unless it was to deep condition.

As you all may remember, I began the #NoHeatChallenge back during the year of 2016 after transitioning from extremely heat damaged hair. I initially set out to only do this challenge for one year but after some time it extended into the last three years. Check out my results below:

So far I’m loving my progress but I can tell I need to improve more with taking care of my hair ends. With this length check and hair update I am trimming them and then focusing more on doing protective styling in which my ends are tucked away along with applying more oils and sealants on them throughout the week. I think that will help prevent split ends more along with more length retention. If you’ve been following me for a while now this go around was about length retention as well in which I believe was a success. Not only that but my hair is now a lot more thicker overall which is a good sign of good hair health.

My routine is pretty simple. I don’t use heat at all, not even for trimming or length checks. I opt for the Mini Twist protective style on a regular basis. With my twists I leave them in for about two weeks at the most which leads me into a set washing schedule of every two weeks. Every other day I will spray my twists with my Cantu Shea Butter Coil Calm Detangler. Before I began using this spray I would just use my spray bottle to spritz my twists with water and then I applied some of my Hollywood Beauty Tea Tree Oil Skin and Scalp Treatment. But now I’ve found the Cantu spray to be a better choice for the added conditioning. The water and oil would help my scalp, but the Detangler spray kept my scalp oil along with my twists soft. I never lay down and sleep without wearing a hair scarf, ever. Sometimes I just wear a hair scarf during the day as well for hair protection, especially on days where the weather is not good. Those days include ones where it is extreme cold. For me, the cold temperatures dry my curls and scalp out so covering my hair is a great option. Other days I cover my hair are when I know I will be outside a lot. With my hair being really thick and full, during the summertime there are more bugs flying around. I have had my fair share of creepy crawlers getting stuck in my curls & me having a slight heart attack getting them out.
