National Voter Registration Day is a national holiday celebrating our democracy. It was first observed in 2012 and has been growing in popularity every year since. Held on the fourth Tuesday of September, National Voter Registration Day will be observed on Tuesday, September 26th this year. The holiday has been endorsed by the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS). It is further supported by the National Association of State Election Directors (NASED).

This year, we are pushing the voting narrative a little more than we already have before, not for ourselves but for our younger generations who have to live under the rules of the officials WE elect into office. Now I put we in all caps because our votes DO matter. During the election of Donald Trump, there was a major false narrative going around the African American community stating that anyone’s votes did not matter and that it was not best for us to even attempt to go to the polls. This was false. By following that false information, most gave up hope in what we truly believed in. Anyone who did not vote saved themselves the guilt of not being held accountable for what happens with this country from a possibility of lack of leadership, but they also opened the door wide open for that same lack of leadership to just come right in and make themselves comfortable. I know we can never go back in the past and change the past but we can do something about making the future better. It is time to change things for the better and the only way we can do that is if voting is still taking place in all communities apart of the United States no matter what political party you are apart of, or choose to support.

I know some may be reading and thinking, “what is the point in voting?”. The point is, you have a right and a privilege to exercise your voice freely without any type of limitations put into place. Now think back just maybe 20-40 years ago, in the African American community there were some your age who did not have that privilege nor right to vote at all. They wanted to desperately to change things for the better but couldn’t. I feel like it is a slap in the face to our ancestors and even some of our grandparents and parents who literally fought and put their lives on the line just so we could simply bubble in our choices for our law officials at the voting polls, and we don’t take advantage of it and do what we are supposed to do in this day and age. Now is the time to get all your ducks in a row for the next Presidential election, and not only that but the local elections as well as those are what matter the most.

Every year millions of Americans find themselves unable to vote because they miss a registration deadline, don’t update their registration, or aren’t sure how to register. National Voter Registration Day wants to make sure everyone has the opportunity to vote. On Tuesday September 26, 2017 volunteers and organizations from all over the country will “hit the streets” in a single day of coordinated field, technology and media efforts. This year Delux Designs (DE), LLC has partnered with the National Voter Registration Day organization to create broad awareness of voter registration opportunities to reach tens of thousands of voters who may not register otherwise.
