Have you ever visited someone’s house and upon entering the front door they asked you to take your shoes off? Have you ever wondered why this is often done in residential homes? Well that is the topic today for #DEArtMom’s post of the week. We are going to discuss and share why this is so important when you have a newborn in the home.

Removing your shoes upon entering your home or anyone’s home is a fading tradition that really needs a big return in our day and age. We are going through a tough time period of diseases and illnesses, for an example the coronavirus or COVID-19 is living proof, and this one simple routine could help counter these tough times in our own households for our own children and our own health.

Just think about it.
If you have a newborn in your home, or an infant, say around 6-8 months old and they are crawling around on your carpet and tile floors on a regular basis don’t you think it would be best to eliminate as much dirt as possible on those surfaces as much as you can? This is not to say that there won’t be some dirt and bacteria as we can’t 100% eliminate everything unless we just don’t walk on that surface and even then there would still be some dust particles present. But we can stop tracking that dirt and grim inside from outside by removing our footwear at the front door.

This will not only begin a more healthy practice of having a cleaner home for a small child, but it would also help towards the hassle of cleaning floors daily through sweeping and vacuuming on a regular. Tile is easier to clean because it is flat and visible all the way to the bottom of it. But carpet can trap dirt and bacteria that you may never be able to get out no matter how many times you vacuum it once it’s walked over with your shoes on.

Removing your shoes at the door also eliminates possibility of choking hazards for small crawling infants. That’s right you are bringing in things from the home that have a potential to make a baby choke to death from simply not removing your shoes each time you enter your home. For example, if you have a gravel driveway and walk on it and then walk into your home with gravel rocks stuck under your sneakers just to walk over your carpet and that gravel drops from your shoes into to the carpet, it is now visible to an infant to pick up and swallow.

Solutions:

A solution to solve this problem and to help towards keeping your home clean and baby proof from the outside world would be having a shoe rack by your door area that you mainly use to enter and exit your home. This could be a door entryway area, or even inside your garage before entering the door of your home. Check out some options included below from our affiliate partner Target:

  • Whitmor 2-Tier Shoe Rack – This particular shoe rack is great and stylish as you can place not only shoes on it but also any bags or boxes you may have with you as well. This is ideal for inside the home, more than outdoors. Only negative we would see with this option is the lack of convenience. You wouldn’t be able to hold your child and place your shoes on swiftly heading in and out of your home. You would have to place your child down and then put your shoes on and off.
  • Honey-Can-Do 2 Tier Stackable Bamboo Shoe Shelf – This storage option for a shoe shelf is great and sturdy due to it being made of bamboo it should last a while and you won’t have to worry about it falling apart too much. Great for in and outdoor storage if you’d like to place it in your carport or garage. This is solely focused on shoe storage unlike the Whitmor one previously where you can place other items on it as well as shoes.
  • Honey-Can-Do Bamboo Shoe Bench – This is another bamboo shoe storage option which means the quality of it is good and you won’t have to worry about it falling apart. It’s by the same company as the previous option, Honey-Can-Do. This option is a mixture of the Whitmor and the Stackable Bamboo Shoe Shelf. You can place it indoors and outdoors, and you can store more than just shoes with this one as it has a place for bags or boxes too.
  • Lynk 9 Pair Convertible Shoe Rack Organizer – For this shoe rack, it is focused on shoe storage but made of metal so you can place it in and outdoors. Great mini option if you’re budget friendly but want great quality along with a great storage option for more than one pair of shoes. Now, this one is a little more convenient because it has that grab and go feel to it where you can pick up a pair of shoes and move to put them on easier than the other options previously mentioned.
  • Household Essentials Shoe Rack – This last option is a little different than the ones above. More on the stylish, trendy, and modern level. We would recommend keeping this one indoors unless you have a closed garage. It is a little on the pricey side if you’re budget friendly right now but a great investment if you’re looking to store a lot of shoes or have a lot of people in and out of your home on a regular basis. You don’t have to worry about bending down too much and having shoes on floor level as well if you have back pains or problems to worry about healthwise. We would recommend this one as well if you have a newborn or small baby that you’re carrying in and out of the home, you won’t have to worry about bending down a lot or far down to put your shoes on while hold your child or children. This rack is a vertical focused and have easier access with this rack option. With this rack option being vertical, this also eliminates more items from being on the floor for your child to get into. We would say it is the best baby proofing option for the home when it comes to shoe storage.
